Launch Recap - February 7th, 2009

Today's launch was also blessed with beautiful rocket flying weather- temperatures in the 70's and low winds. Our flyer turnout was a bit lower than January.  Still we had a great time.

The ROCK rocket contest yielded 5 entries of varying complexity and size.  Believe it or not, the ROCK Logo rocket is not that easy to build.  With the smaller fin size and larger diameter, achieving stabile flight requires some doing.  The smallest flyer turned in the largest AND most complex ROCK "rocker" and took the prize for this month's contest. Jason C, sent it up initially on 4 B's and one C11. The C did not fire so the underpowered flight literally bounced as the chute came out just before impact. The second attempt on 4 C6 and one C11 gave it lots more boost and a 300" flight. Jason took the grand prize.  Ryan also flew his gap staged ROCK rocket on two tries to see if he could stabilize the sustainer.  Didn't work this time. Don't give up Ryan!

Tom D and Brian C also submitted entries with the Orange Yellow Green paint scheme found on the club stickers.  Both flew with a small cork screw motion.  Brian's was a 3 cluster of B's. Tom's a single C11.

If we would have been handing out awards for the most creative entry, Chris M with his <---R-O-C-K---<<<  arrow shaped "Styrofoam Rock-it" rocket would have taken the cake!  His foam R-O-C-K letters on a BT-5 shaft really caught the spirit of thinking outside of the "logo" box.

Other than the ROCK contest, we had some specialty modeling with Chris M's Mini Orbital Transport flying on A10's.  First flight the glider tangled in the booster chute, but the second flight made lazy circles in the sky on it's maiden glide. Chris also did 3 flights for an EMRR test of his Hawk powered glider.   It flew well the first flight but broke the boom at the ejection on the second.  Anyone want to do a write up for Chris?  He's seeking help.

Marc D's Mercuri Atomizer on a D12 took the altitude record for the day.  It even momentarily disappeared in some low passing clouds.  Bob and Marc spent some time in the horse pasture next door, and finally came back with the goods.

Speaking of creativity, Andrew P built a "Trimotor" rocket at the field, worked through the stability issues with club involvement and successfully flew up.  A design flaw in the central engine allowed ejection gases to escape without parachute ejection.  It did a parabola, and pranged in the corner of the adjoining field.  Upon recovery, forensics yielded good data for learning how to improve the design.

Another of Andrew's projects came from a nerf football dart.  It made two successful flights with specialized "boing" recovery.

Just a plug for our next Club meeting.  Come out on February 28 to the Oviedo Library at 1:00PM to offer your input for a better section.  We've had some good years with activity, but we're eager to invite your participation to make a difference in 2009!!  See you there!
